[Imitation Gold Leaf and Acrylic on Polythene]
The diptych ‘Thresholds’ uses imitation gold leaf and acrylic on polythene to layer frames, forms and filters from smartphones, selfies and Russian Orthodox icons in order to make visual and symbolic connections between these reference points. By layering geometric forms derived from the composition of religious icons, the layout of digital displays and the smartphone bezel, ‘Thresholds’ visualises the similarities in how both contemporary iconographer Aidan Hart discusses the function of icons as windows or portals to the divine; and how when interviewed by the artist, the social media influencer Kat Atkinson described her smartphone as like a gateway.
