A drawing made by cutting up my body weight in celery

(2016-17)
[Celery and kitchen knife on paper; performance to video for Instagram]
A drawing made by cutting up my body weight in celery, combines performance and drawing; using the social media platform Instagram as a meta-medium. A quantity of celery equivalent to the artist’s body weight is cut up using a large kitchen knife over the course of a year. The process was documented in over 900 short videos shot from above, capturing the chopping of each stem of celery. These videos were then uploaded to the social media platform Instagram and accompanied by hashtags which the artist had appropriated from other user’s posts, and which related to online appreciation economies, the clean eating trend, and art. A drawing emerged through the mark-making process of cutting up celery stems repeatedly; the paper is stained, scuffed, scarred and in places has been completely eroded.
